Editorial Review Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends that butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel Radway

Gross March 23, 2003 10 out of 75 found this review helpful
We are in the caterpillar stage right now, they are disgusting! These are not the pretty furry caterpillars we have in the midwest, they are slimy worms with a few hairs sticking out. My husband even says they are gross!! They spin webs at this stage and you can see their waste, and they are ugly and disgusting!! Think twice.
Enslaving butterflies for my own personal enjoyment! July 23, 2009 A. Barry (Elk Grove, CA United States) 2 out of 25 found this review helpful
This is the greatest idea ever! See, I'm a kid with low self-esteem. I get bullied all the time and I'm afraid to talk to girls. There's really been no cure for problems like these, until now!
With Live Butterfly Garden, I can snag innocent butterflies from their comfortable habitat and force them to live a miserable life in a little confined cage net thing.
My, how the tables have turned! Now I'm the one bossing others around! Fly my underlings, fly! Huh, you're sleeping?! Lets see how sleepy you are when I vigorously shake your cage!
It's really empowering bossing around these butterflies. Although this doesn't change my school situation in the slightest, I'm the master of my own domain come the weekend!
The caterpillars are not meant to be eaten! October 29, 2009 Ryan Guthridge (Centreville, VA) 8 out of 42 found this review helpful
I really cheated myself out of the best part of the butterfly garden by devouring the caterpillars mercilessly before they reached the cocoon stage.

Children Toys:
Purchased two cars for grandchildren. One conked out after 30 minutes. (give me toys) was fast to replace it. Great Vendor but product may have a few flaws but not the vendor's fault. The price was good and I would buy from this Vendor again if Amazon did not have in stock.
